Art As Resistance: Make Your Own Zine
With Tracy White
Wednesday, December 2, 6:30 - ______ on Zoom
This workshop explores art as an act of witness, resistance, and community, and puts this knowledge directly into your hands. No artistic experience required.
Every participant has the opportunity to create a zine, a small handmade booklet that can be all words, all images, or both. Photos, collage, stick figures - it’s your choice. Zines and activism have over a 100 year history, you will be part of this lineage.
We will go through a short exercise to identify something that is meaningful to you and then make a zine that uses a simple 8.5 x 11 template. The subject is yours to choose: a memory, a person, something you witnessed, something you want the world to know. By the end of the session, you will have discovered what you want to say and created a zine. Your zines can be printed, folded and handed out!
All you need for the session is 8.5 x 11 paper, writing/drawing pens, and (optional) scissors. If you may want to collage, also bring glue, magazines, photos, etc.
Tracy White is a cartoonist and NYU professor. She believes stories can change the world. Her current book, Unaccompanied: Stories of Brave Teenagers Seeking Asylum tells the true experiences of brave teens fleeing their home countries to seek asylum in the US.
